Health
Care. A tour of Morocco in June 2001 is highlighted in the
July-August newsletter. A Millennium staff writer visited three centers in
Marrakech, Meknes and Agadir that work with mentally and physically disabled
children. Dedicated American ophthalmologists
have been restoring sight in rural Morocco for two years, and the vision has
doubled in 2001. In each of the last two summers, an eye doctor
from the U.S. has paid a two-week call to remove cataracts from those who have
been blinded by the growths in both eyes. The doctor in each case removes the
cataract from just one eye.
This year, two ophthalmologists will visit. In
1999, one doctor performed 204 procedures in nine days. Last year, the ophthalmologist
took on more difficult cases and topped 100 operations.
In each case, the doctor worked 12-hour days with
only one 40-minute
break. Moroccans have been glad to see them.
