Home to ancient dynasties and civilizations, China is one of the largest countries in the world; in population it is the largest. The terrain of China is quite varied; it has rugged elevations and mountains in the west, vast deserts in the North, subtropical forests in the south, and the densely populated east and southeast coastlines. Despite recent economic strides and continued growth, China's size and diverse population mean that there are still those who struggle with meeting daily needs.
The Hani are the poorest of China's recognized minorities. They suffer from a very high infant mortality rate and very low literacy rates. Life expectancy among these ancient people is a mere 58 years. They are a people in need of a hand up and Hani Coffee is reaching out. The Hani People live in Southwestern China.
A teacher, a lawyer, an aid worker and an administrator joined together in a life-giving journey with the Hani people. The beans for Hani Coffee's signature roast (Simao Dark) come from the terraced mountains of Southwest China. Working alongside the Hani Villagers who help grow and harvest beans, they partner with them and business associates and customers to provide medical, educational and clean water projects.
You see, for the people at Hani Coffee, this is much more than a coffee business, it is a people business too. It is about people helping to make a difference in the lives of other people half a world away.
"It's why we started Hani Coffee Company. Yeah, we love coffee. But, what we're really all about is caring.
We want to make a difference in the lives of a people that seem to have been forgotten. We've seen firsthand how love and compassion have changed the way our Hani friends see themselves and their world. At Hani Coffee Company, we don't always get it right, but we're committed to loving well. The mission of Hani Coffee Co. is simple: great coffee, changed lives....we're about more than just offering a premium product.
We're about investing in people. Every decision we make, every purchase you make, contributes to making a difference for good."
One of Hani Coffee's Core values is relationship: "From our growers to our customers, we value lasting relationship. We are committed to fostering long term relationship with the Hani; we seek to serve and the customer we want to satisfy. In our mind, friendship was never intended to be temporary or disposable.
Just last December, Hani Coffee staff and friends
visited two rural villages to conduct dental hygiene
training and a vision screening clinic.
Setting up in a school in each village, they held the training and conducted the screening for over 400 students and teachers. Vision problems were detected in 20 students.
Over the next few weeks, Hani Coffee worked with opthalmologists to determine the severity of each child's eye problem and with parents to determine a viable course of action. It's exciting to know these children will have improved eyesight enabling them to do better in school and participate more fully in village life.
Color pages help children learn
about caring for their teeth.
