Handykrafts
A 'Hands-on' Effort in the Village
|
We at Handykrafts,
SNT's non-profit handicrafts unit, are committed to promoting high quality local
Indonesian arts and crafts
made in small home industries.
These products display the traditional skills and techniques of
craft working
communities in West Java. For example, this
means we purposefully avoid making the robes we sell from non-authentic 'batik'
cloth (so-called 'batik' printing) or cloth superficially adorned by using a batik motif.
Instead, we offer authentic handmade batik cap
(hand-stamped batik) and batik tulis (hand-drawn batik), or, at
times, even a combination of
both.
|
| Ensuring that craftspeople earn a fair living for their skills means
that important traditions and income-earning opportunities are sustained, giving them
tangible hope for the future.
|
| Your purchase can make a
difference for Indonesians who are still experiencing the long term effects of
the recent Asian economic crisis. The
profit from each item sold goes directly into helping the
poor through community development projects, aimed at funding appropriate technology,
community health and micro-credit projects.
